Project Description

NicNevol Engineering Services conducted a geotechnical exploration and evaluation for the proposed Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) Tower at Williston Municipal Airport (X60). The scope included subsurface borings, laboratory testing, and engineering analysis to develop foundation recommendations for the tower structure.

The investigation consisted of two (2) Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings advanced to depths of 25 feet, groundwater measurements, and laboratory classification testing. Engineering analysis addressed bearing capacity, settlement, and groundwater control, providing parameters for both shallow spread footing and drilled shaft alternatives.

Site preparation recommendations were included for excavation, replacement with select fill or No. 57 stone, and compaction standards to ensure long-term foundation stability. Earthwork, pavement, and erosion control guidelines were also provided to support safe and durable construction practices.

NicNevol Responsibilities

  • Conducting subsurface investigation with two (2) SPT borings (25 ft each).
  • Collecting and analyzing soil samples for laboratory classification tests.
  • Evaluating site stratigraphy, groundwater levels, and seasonal impacts.
  • Developing shallow and drilled shaft foundation design parameters.
  • Providing recommendations for site preparation, fill replacement, and compaction.
  • Delivering final geotechnical report with parameters for structural design and earthwork.

Project Highlights

  • Two SPT borings advanced to 25 ft with groundwater monitoring.
  • Subsurface: sands, silty sands, clayey soils, and Ocala limestone at shallow depth.
  • Groundwater encountered at ~11 ft below ground surface.
  • Laboratory testing: Atterberg limits, moisture content, and fines content.
  • Foundation options: shallow spread footing or drilled shaft design.
  • Pavement and earthwork guidelines provided for site preparation and compaction.
