Project Description

NicNevol Engineering Services conducted a geotechnical exploration and evaluation for a condemned two-story residence located at 2817 Market St. N in Jacksonville, FL. The purpose of the study was to assess subsurface soils and groundwater conditions contributing to observed settlement and structural distress. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

Field exploration included two (2) Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings drilled to 25 ft depth. Groundwater was encountered between 13.5 and 14 ft below ground surface. Laboratory testing confirmed fine sands (SP) with low organics and low density, classifying them as loose to medium-dense materials. Recommendations included undercutting 4–6 ft of weak soils, replacing with compacted structural fill or No. 57 stone, and providing a clean bearing surface for shallow spread footings with an allowable bearing capacity of approximately 2,000 psf. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

NicNevol Responsibilities

  • Performing subsurface exploration with SPT borings.
  • Logging and classifying soils per USCS standards.
  • Conducting laboratory testing for moisture, fines, and organics.
  • Evaluating foundation soil suitability and bearing capacity.
  • Providing recommendations for excavation, fill, and compaction.
  • Delivering the geotechnical report with foundation design parameters.

Project Highlights

  • Client: Mari Gussin – Private Residence.
  • Two-story condemned residence showing settlement and sinking.
  • Field program: 2 SPT borings to 25 ft depth.
  • Subsurface: loose to medium-dense fine sands with low N-values.
  • Groundwater: 13.5–14 ft below grade.
  • Allowable bearing: ≈2,000 psf (after replacement and compaction).
  • Recommendations: undercut 4–6 ft, replace with structural fill/No. 57 stone, compact to 95% Modified Proctor.
