Project Description

NicNevol Engineering Services performed a geotechnical exploration and evaluation beneath the southbound lane of SR 121 at Tom Norman Road in Macclenny, FL, to support roadway rehabilitation and design.

The field program included two (2) Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings to depths of approximately 15 ft and 20 ft using a CME-55 drill rig. The pavement structure consisted of ~6 in. asphalt over ~8 in. limerock base; underlying soils were fine sands (SP), clayey sands (SC) and gray clays with organics (CH). Groundwater was observed at roughly 2.1–3.0 ft below grade.

Recommendations included undercutting unsuitable clays/organics, replacement with compacted structural fill, subgrade stabilization, and groundwater/surface-water control to ensure long-term performance.

NicNevol Responsibilities

  • Performing SPT borings and logging soil stratigraphy & groundwater.
  • Laboratory testing for classification and strength parameters.
  • Evaluating bearing capacity, settlement, and subgrade support.
  • Recommendations for excavation, fill replacement, and subgrade stabilization.
  • Guidance for groundwater/surface-water control and documentation for design.

Project Highlights
