Project Description
NicNevol Engineering Services completed a geotechnical exploration and evaluation for the proposed expansion of the Northeast Environmental C&D disposal facility in Palatka, FL. The study assessed subsurface soils and groundwater, settlement potential, and slope stability to support design and construction of new disposal cells.
Field activities included nine (9) Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings advanced to depths of 30–60 ft, with soil sampling and groundwater monitoring. Laboratory testing was performed to classify soils and determine moisture, Atterberg limits, organics, and fines content. Results identified fine sands, silty sands, and clayey sands to ~40 ft, underlain by sandy clays and denser soils. Groundwater was encountered at shallow depths of about 2–6.5 ft across the site.
Engineering analyses included settlement predictions and slope-stability modeling. Calculated settlements ranged from ~2–5 in., and stability factors of safety exceeded regulatory criteria—confirming acceptable long-term performance for the planned waste embankments.
NicNevol Responsibilities
- Performing SPT borings and subsurface logging (30–60 ft).
- Conducting laboratory testing (classification, Atterberg limits, organics, moisture, fines).
- Evaluating bearing capacity, settlement, and slope stability.
- Providing earthwork and embankment design parameters.
- Recommending excavation, structural fill (SP sands), and compaction to 95% Modified Proctor; water control measures.
- Delivering a geotechnical report with DEP-compliant design parameters.
Project Highlights
- Client: Nova HydroGeologic, LLC.
- Proposed C&D facility expansion (multi-cell).
- Field program: 9 SPT borings (30–60 ft depth).
- Soils: sands (SP/SM), silty sands, sandy clays; organics locally.
- Groundwater: ~2–6.5 ft below grade.
- Settlement: ~2–5 in. under design loading.
- Slope stability: factors of safety ≥ 1.5–2.0 (meets DEP criteria).
- Recommendations: excavation, placement of structural fill (SP), compaction to 95% Modified Proctor; groundwater/surface-water control.
